Sustainable efficient production in farming and food

Foundation Projects

One of the core objectives of the CEUKF is to identify gaps in knowledge and translational research, and to encourage or undertake new work to address those needs.

From the outset a series of short-term, pilot studies, or ‘Foundation Projects’, were planned. Funded from within the CEUKF budget, with additional external funding where possible, these studies are focused on the core theme of Sustainable efficient Production.

The first project is to develop a methodology to allow the assessment of a range of key sustainability parameters against production. The anticipated outcome is a simple tool which can then be used in a series of case studies and benchmarking exercises on a range of farming and food products.

The subsequent case studies will span the fields of horticulture, arable and livestock, to address specific challenges in economic production and sustainability. The first and second examples will apply the SEP index and benchmarking methods in two important and contrasting products, namely wheat (Foundation Project 1 or FP 1) and lamb (FP2).
